Park(ing) Day makes its return in 2024!

What is it?

Park(ing) day is a global, public, participatory project where people across the world temporarily repurpose curbside parking spaces and convert them into public parks and social spaces to advocate for safer, greener, and more equitable streets for people.

Sustainable Dubuque will be sponsoring this event as a continuation of our education and outreach efforts of our 50% by 2030 Climate Action and Resiliency Plan.

When and Where?

Park(ing) Day will take place on Friday September 20th, 2024 from 10:00am-4:00pm.

Locations are as follows:

  • Main Street from blocks 9th-12th

excluding handicap spots and endcaps within these blocks

Important Information:

Participants’ registrations must be submitted by 5:00 PM on Monday, September 9th, 2024

All participants must have a signed liability waiver to take part in the event. If you don’t have one, a waiver will be provided to you at check-in.

Know Before You Go:

Safety is a top priority for this event. Please be aware that the streets are NOT closed for this event. Participants should be mindful and cross streets at designated crosswalks and intersections to visit parks. Make sure to look both ways before crossing a street as you go to visit other parks. Be mindful of your children as streets are still open to cars and parking is available between reserved parklets.

Please only visit parks from the sidewalk. Park hosts have worked hard to set up their spaces and trampling over barricades from non-sidewalk entrances is NOT allowed.

To Create a Park(ing) Space:

Notes: Please make sure you have your parking space set up and ready for 'park visitors' by 9:50am. Complete your takedown by 5:00pm.

Your 'park' can only take place in the parallel parking space (please leave the sidewalk clear for people to use). Parking space clean up is the responsibility of the participant. This ensures that our streets remain safe for everyone to use.

If you have registered, you will receive an email on Friday September 13th confirming your parking meter number(s), some additional safety guidance, and additional information.

Barrier Requirements:

  • Must be at least one foot tall

  • Must be continuous with a four-foot maximum space between barrier objects; and

  • Must be contained within the reserved parking spot(s)

For example; rope, bungee cords, chains, tape, or a similar item may be used to create the continuous barrier; however, a minimum of five, one foot or taller objects must be spaced evenly inside the parklet’s street-sharing edge for this type of design to comply with barrier requirements

Ideas to think about:

  • Shade: consider umbrellas, sheets, flags, or another creative material

  • Symbolic ground covering: consider area rugs, fake grass, or another material - avoid using real grass

  • Seating: the more seating, the more chances for visitors to your park

  • Self-supporting boundary: give your park visitors a sense of enclosure and safety when visiting your park

  • Recycle materials!

  • Leave no trace!

  • Have fun!
